Ko taku he whakamarama mena ra he tika enei whakapae.

I oati a Savage e whakatutuki ia i nga wawata i tonohia e Ratana. He tirohanga mana haapori to te roopu torangapu o Ngati Kaimahi. Ko te Tiriti o Waitangi, mana motuhake, me nga komiti whakahaere huri noa i te motu, nga kaupapa here i wawatatia e Ratana. Engari kaore tenei tumanako i whakatutukitia. Kua horo a Maori ki nga mahi tinihanga o Ngati Kaimahi. Me kii, waiho ma Maori ano e whakahaere i a Maori.

Koinei tetahi o nga take e whakarangirua ana i nga whakaaro o nga kaipooti.

Ei!

RATANA ENTERED into the legendary ‘alliance’ with the Labour Party because he saw that the ideals and goals of Michael Savage and his ‘Christian socialism’ aligned with his own goals of raising the bar for the carpenters, shoemakers and blacksmiths – the ordinary people of King Tawhiao’s prophecy. The relationship was always predicated on Ratana’s 1936 warning to Savage: “May you never forget your responsibilities to the Maori people for when you forget this, your government will fall.” After the death of Savage, Ratana MPs were sidelined or dismissed in their efforts to introduce legislation and establish structures that would bring Maori closer to equality.
