It Makes You Think – Victoria Placed Amoung Top 500 Universities

Victoria has been placed among the world’s top 500 universities, although it has been placed significantly lower than some other New Zealand universities.

Five New Zealand universities were placed in the annual study conducted by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. This replicates last year’s results, where the same five also made the cut.

The University of Auckland once again placed highest of the five, making it into the top 300. The University of Otago also made it into the top 300 this time around.

Victoria ranked in the 400-500 grouping, along with Massey and Canterbury.

Vice-Chancellor Pat Walsh was unavailable for comment last week, but said in a weekly staff newsletter that it was “very pleasing” for Victoria to be placed in the top 500 for the second year in a row.

The study encompasses more than 2000 universities worldwide, and is based on several indicators of academic or research performance. These include published research, per capita academic performance and the number of Nobel Prize and Field Medal winners from each university.

Harvard University in the United States was ranked the top university in the world.
