Australian Liberal National Party member Wyatt Roy, at the ripe old age of 20 years, has been elected as the youngest member of Parliament in the federal election held on 21 August.

Roy, who is still completing his degree at Queensland University, won the right to represent the electorate of Longman in northern Brisbane in Australia’s House of Representatives.

An election eve gaffe by Labor candidate Jon Sullivan, who criticised the parenting skills of a father with a disabled child, was one of the contributing factors to Roy’s success.

His election promises, which focused on funding for local health and transport issues, also made Roy popular with voters.

Roy is committed to the development of sustainable long-term planning and is also a member of the party’s Disability Policy Committee.

Former Liberal treasurer Peter Costello said that Roy was on track to become the leader of the party by 2035.
