Howdy, folks! Welcome to the first edition of Bent – this year’s queer column. Who’s ready to get their gay on?

We are your UniQ Co-Presidents, Gen and Sean, and boy do we have awesome stuff lined up for you queer-minded peeps!

For those of you who don’t know, UniQ is an all inclusive social and support group at Victoria University for queer students and their friends. We provide awesome events, safe spaces and a great venue for socialising and peer support. We have regular meetings, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for posters or notices in Salient if you’re keen to join in.

Okay! So! Things we have planned. First up—Pride Week (18-22 July, Week 2 of Trimester 2). Monday is movie night and it looks like we’ll be watching Hedwig and The Angry Inch, a riotous indie musical comedy with drag and jelly babies! Good times. On Tuesday we are graced with the presence of Mani Mitchell, an inspiring speaker who’ll be talking on a variety of enlightening queer topics. Wednesday sees us heading down to Scotty and Mal’s for a rockin’ round or two of Bingay, $2 a board and a fabulous drag hostess—what’s not to like? On Thursday we’ll be taking to the stage for our Open Mic Night at Milk and Honey (for which we are still looking for performers! Homosexuality not a prerequisite) and we’ll wrap up the whole week on Friday night with our annual Traffic Light Party at Club Ivy, a notoriously raucous night. $5 for students, $10 for non-students, and sweet drinks specials from 9-11pm.

As you can probably tell, we are super excited about all this, so be there or be square! Check our Facebook for times, locations and more details.

On yet another interesting note, launches later on this year, a great campaign being run by a group of amazing UniQ and queer-affiliated folks. This awareness-raising movement is all about equality for all New Zealanders in marriage and adoption, and for the right of all kids to feel safe in their schools. This a crazy exciting and fast evolving project, so watch this space! Yay, homosexual law reform!

Other than that, the UniQ club meets every fortnight-ish and does cool stuff like quizzes and parties and coffee dates and movie nights—it’s super casual and lots of fun! And you should totally come. We also are developing a few other groups including The Girls’ Group (for the queer ladies) and The Trans* Group as well as the Safe Spaces Programme which offers mentoring and education for queer students and their friends and family. For more information on any of these contact or hit us up on Facebook.

So come hang out with us, we’d love to meet you! Remember, use condoms, be yourself and wash behind your ears. Stay fabulous!

Lots of love,
Gen F. and Sean M. xoxo
