Editorial – Escapism

Escapism

as we write this editorial, we are deciding on who will compromise with the music in the Office. Molly wants whatever is playing in Courtenay Place’s finest clubs right now, because tequila shots and grinding are the only legitimate reasons someone should be awake at this ungodly hour. Stella wants One Direction—even though she acknowledges their formulaic ‘music’ seeks to profit on the psychological needs of hormonal young girls — she likes to think about attractive boys singing about how much they love her.

We both wanted our music choices to escape the fact that in this moment, at 4am on production night, alone and smelly from working for nineteen hours straight, we still have five pages of a magazine to make.

If you’re reading this now, we somehow managed to finish our job and avoid the plethora of distractions available to us in this modern age: Facebook, Lindauer, Beyonce, ASOS.com, videos of cats, and just one more episode of that sitcom…

University can be a demanding place, but fortunately we have the internet to fill every facet of our lives (see: ‘Caught in the Web?’); a drinking culture that makes switching off socially acceptable (see: ‘Wasted Opportunities’), and an endless supply of alcohol readily available to facilitate this (see:‘The Legislation that didn’t Dampen Spirits’). But all this behaviour begs the question, what effect does all this escaping really have on us? (see: ‘The Great Escapes’)

While sometimes it can seem easier to hit the bar instead of the books, or watch friendships unravel on Girls instead of addressing the pass-ag text in your inbox, at some point we all have to face up to reality, however harsh it may be. So in your pursuit of the Great Escape, just remember to call home once in a while.

And in the meantime, have that next drink for us.
