Chuganaut, Masters of Metal and Dave Snell, Mount Street Bar, Friday 29 February
This was one of the sweetest gig concepts I’ve witnessed: massive speaker stacks rattling a student cafe; opening with a hair-metal covers band in lycra and spandex; finish with a kookie damn bassy weird metal; and in between the two, hear Waikato’s famous boganologist Dave Snell talk about, well, the audience.
There were only thirty-odd people there, but it didn’t matter since the vibe was geat, and anyway the best moshpits have only a handful of people in an open space going berserk but picking one another up at the end. The lead singer of Masters of Metal’s heart-shaped hole in his spandex top (revealing bushy chest hair) was a highlight.
