Editorial – Change

Buzzwords. Gotta love them.

In 2008 the word “change” was thrown around politics like handfuls of cocaine in a Mexican drug lord’s barrio homestead. Happily ecstatic pundits, high on the cocaine of change applauded anyone who used the word more than twice in a sentence. Obama, America’s biggest drug pusher, coated the USA in a thick blanket of the stuff as the Northern winter set in.

A little fleck of that cocaine-cloud landed here at Victoria in the form of the Change Proposal.

Some of the 2008 VUWSA Executive thought that it would be a good idea to change the structure of VUWSA. A structure that is far from perfect and a structure that has led the association into strife.

So the Change Proposal was born. It set out minor steps that may or may not have worked. It, in no way, addressed the broader issues facing VUWSA: its solvency and continued future. It was a quick high. Nitrous oxide for the soul..

Change can be good and change can be bad. Change for change’s sake is plain bad, e.g., Facebook. Change without considering broader implications is even worse. Informed change with adequate consultation and clearly archived thought processes can be okay. You can never please everyone, but at least thoughts and opinions from all sides will be ground into the process of change—making it legitimate.

VUWSA is your association. You paid money to join it. You have a voice in how it should change. This issue is about what has happened so far, how it has happened and the history behind the need for change. Hopefully it will inform you so that you can decide whether change is necessary, and if so, what form it should take.

We can drop as many buzzwords and snort as many lines of change as our poor association can handle—but the net result of the substance abuse is that future generations of students could be left to clean up the mess.
