Editorial. Communities

We live in a society of niches. Of cliques. Of groups.

Everything and everyone clusters into little family or faux-family units. We construct our identities from those groups to which we subscribe or belong. Whether we are in them by choice, or simply by dint of birth or identity, the communities we are a part of define the many little bits that gloop together to form the big ‘I’—or the even bigger ‘Us’.

One of the real joys of a university education is being exposed to so many ideas and people that you would not normally encounter. So, to that end, we give you this: our Communities issue, an attempted cross-section of some of the communities, clubs and groups present within Vic today. In this issue you’ll encounter the Territorial Army (pg. 24), the Deaf Community (pg. 26), and VUWSA’s newest official rep group, the Science Society (pg. 22), in the midst of many others. Some of them you may be aware of, if only in passing. Hopefully, this issue will help you to gain some knowledge of those you don’t know already, and a better one of those you do.

All the communities that we are part of loom so large in our collective lives that sometimes it is easy to think that they are the only ones that exist or, at least, matter. Which is, of course, patently false. With some obvious exceptions—those groups motivated by hate or fear—all communities deserve our respect and awareness.

It is now your duty, as a good member of any society, to go out there and encounter some other groups. Reach outside your social shell, if only for a little while. You might be surprised by what you find.

See you next week,
