CanDo is Victoria University’s representative group for disabled students. Our goal is to assist in creating an accessible and welcoming learning environment, and encouraging connections within the vibrant and continually evolving disabled community.

If you’re a new student to university, or to Victoria, welcome! Moving from work or school to university can be a tough transition. Even moving from one university to another can have its challenges, as everywhere works a little differently. Here are some tips for disabled students who are new to university:

Get in touch with Disability Services. Even if you don’t feel like you need any accommodations, being registered with them will help down the road if you encounter any hiccups. Be aware that they have many students per advisor so get in early. University style teaching is very different to what you may have encountered before, so Disability Services is the best place to help you figure out solutions to new problems.

Introduce yourself to your lecturers and tutors, by email or in person. I’ve found it very helpful to let my lecturers know of any accommodations that I may need during semester. If you don’t need them, then great! If you do, then the lecturers are already aware of what you need. You don’t have to disclose your exact disability to them if you’re not comfortable doing so.

This year, we will be continuing with our popular pizza lunches, LEGO in the Hub, and our contributions to Mental Health Awareness Week. We will be present throughout clubs week, so come along and say hello! You can also get in touch with us on Facebook, or send us an email at As always, diversity is our greatest strength, and our events are open to anyone with an interest in inclusion and accessibility.

With love, your badass and disabled CanDo exec.
